The moment is ripe to switch Manchester United's tactical setup - Amorim declares.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven senior players to miss the Boxing Day win against Newcastle.

Head coach Ruben Amorim contends that changing Manchester United's tactical system due to external scrutiny would have meant "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his customary three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and instead field an traditional four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

He himself conceded this effectively transformed into a six-man defensive block in the closing stages as his squad dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second clean sheet of the campaign.

While he once famously stated that even the Pope could force him to change his system, Amorim maintains the ability to utilize varied formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

However, he emphasizes he could only make the switch when his team were performing at an acceptable level - or else it would seem as if he was succumbing to external pressure.

"When I arrived here last season, I realized maybe I lacked the squad to perform effectively in a back three, but it was the beginning of a project," he stated.

"The goal was to establish an philosophy. Currently is a separate moment. We are missing a full complement of players, and we have to adapt, so they see why we are making changes.

"It is not because of the pressure of you guys, or the fans.

"When the press discuss altering the system repeatedly, I cannot change because the squad will think I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is a disaster for the manager.

"Once we are playing well in our preferred setup, that becomes the right time to adapt.

"This will help us grow into a stronger side because when all the players return, we are not going to use three defenders all the time."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

With just two wins in eight games prior to defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to say his side have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, working with a severely stretched roster, with seven senior stars already unavailable for the upcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will increase if midfielder Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pushing his boss to let him to return after his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already telling me he needs to train," revealed Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

The Captain's Role Is Unwavering

However, the Portuguese star will probably still be deeply engaged, as whereas most injured players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to carry on providing guidance.

"The guy is a leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and speaking. He's always speaking. That is the reason he's the captain.

"He has flaws sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he recovers, he goes to watch the other guys training. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Injured Personnel

Although the exact date for the captain's return - and that of fellow unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
